Blade Maintenance 101

A kukri rewards basic, consistent care more than perfect technique. Five rules will keep your blade going for decades.

1. Wipe after every use

Sap and tannins eat carbon steel fast. A microfiber wipe and a thumbnail of oil after each session is enough.

2. Oil weekly in wet trips

Camellia or food-safe mineral oil. Light coat, blade and bolster.

3. Strop, don’t sharpen daily

Strop weekly during heavy use, full sharpening monthly. Over-sharpening removes life from the edge.

4. Condition the sheath

Leather sheaths every 90 days with neatsfoot or mink oil. Dry slowly, never near heat.

5. Watch the cho

If the cho starts to crack, retire the blade from chopping. It’s a stress-relief feature and an early-warning system.
